Lazaro Estrada, pitching for the third game in a row, couldn't hold the Blue Jays' first lead of the day, the one they'd finally managed in the top of the twelfth inning of a game they had very little business still being around in at all. Shane Bieber had been dinged for a pair of Kyle Schwarber home runs, one of them of the three-run variety, and any day where your starting pitcher allows five runs is probably just a loss, right? And yet Ernie Clement narrowly missed (like by maybe four feet!) tying the game with a three-run home run in the eighth, settling cheerfully instead for an RBI double that set the stage for Andrés Giménez (what is it with this guy?) to bloop in a pair and bring the Blue Jays all the way back, tied at five, where the game remained through eleven innings, very much assisted, latterly, by Nathan Lukes' fantastic throw from right field to Alejandro Kirk to cut down what would have been the winning run at the plate. All great stuff that's great to see! Lukes came in to score on a Jésus Sanchez double-play grounder (they don't give you an RBI for those [fair enough]) in the top of the twelfth, but honestly, it's totally okay that Estrada couldn't keep the Phillies (whose fans boo so much; like so much) off the board in the bottom half. At that point, it had really been a lot. Of course a three-game sweep of the significantly-better-than-us-this-year Philadelphia Phillies would have been a particularly sweet fruit, but two-out-of-three on the road is still, I don't know, a fairly tangy delight, I guess (and it constitutes, of course, the Charlie Montoyo Sweep [we still miss you Charlie, and hope that you're well]). If we can keep any of this going (literally any of it!) as the Red Sox come to town, still more or less on their historically great month-or-so-long run, my delight, which is already running along at a pretty solid level, will only increase. Imagine!
