Who would have believed last fall, as Jeff Hoffman struck out the side not long after George Springer's seventh-inning three-run home run to put the Blue Jays past the Mariners in the seventh game of a first-rate ALCS and clinch Toronto's first pennant in thirty-two years, that these two fine squads, largely unchanged, would spend most if not all (we'll see!) of the next summer on the outside of the playoff seedings looking in, and trying to make do with the two worst offences in either league? First off, it would be a super weird thing to be thinking about at all, obviously, rather than just being like, "this rules." But nevertheless, it's definitely strange that it has happened. It sure has, though! If Vladdy's struggles (a 94 wRC+ after a season at 137) have troubled you (I think hey have troubled us all), consider Cal Raleigh's: a wRC+ cut nearly in half (84 this year after last year's remarkable 161), a batting average (which we don't care about that much anymore) of .165, an OPB (which we definitely do) of just .283, his sixty homers (that's too many) nowhere to be seen. Tough times all around! Except for for us, last night, in which we romped awesomely: three home runs (Okamoto, Springer, Lukes again), a couple doubles (Vladdy, Springer), and six more Cy Youngable innings from Dylan Cease. That Cleveland lost, too, made for even better night, and puts the Blue Jays two-and-a-half back with a three-game series against the Guardians next week looming large as all heck, provided we can get through these next two against what is sure to be better Mariners pitching than we saw last night (they are generally excellent at it).
