Dylan Cease is having so fine a year (no worse than second in the AL Cy Young conversation) that even in his "bad" starts—three runs on five hits, four walks, and seven strikeouts against he preposterously streaking (or having recently preposterously streaked, I suppose) Boston Red Sox—he still leaves his team in a position to win, even if his team happens to be second-worst in all of baseball (we have jumped ahead of the Seattle Mariners! 2025 ALCS rematch!) at actually scoring runs (a crucial, if obscure, offensive metric). The usually surehanded Red Sox third-baseman Caleb Durbin kicked what probably should have been not just an out, but a fairly routine double play grounder in the fifth, opening the door for the Blue Jays to tie it up at three, led by the rookies at the top of the order, Charles McAdoo and Brett Bateman, though in truth everybody got in on it from there: all nine Blue Jays starters either reached base safely or knocked in a run. The bullpen did one heck of a job behind Cease's five innings (we have grown accustomed to him going deeper, but it was not to be), with Chase Lee, Brendon Little, Braydon Fisher, and Spencer Miles allowing no runs and just four baserunners between them in the four innings they were called upon to cover. Just two-and-a-half back! No worse than a split in this four-game series against the Sox! Vibes are vastly improved! Imagine if we were able to get back to .500 by the end of the month! Wouldn't September really be something were that to be the case! I say that it would be so let's try super hard at that!
