| George Springer vs. Bo Bichette in a short-pants-off (so to speak) |
For all the Blue Jays' woes at the plate, they haven't actually been shut out all that often so far this season, have they? I think this is just the third time, if my quick count on Baseball Reference that I did not double check can be trusted. A pity, really, in that Kevin Gausman was in fine form through six, but left the game down by a run; that Mason Fluharty and Tommy Nance allowed a run each in the innings that followed proved immaterial, in the end, on account of how we turned our six hits and two walks into very little (in fact nothing!). Vladdy sat this one out with back tightness, and not for the first time—is this nagging minor injury what's keeping him from mashing in the manner to which we've grown so accustomed? There honestly isn't much that I'd put past back tightness. Finally, I would like to note that Bo Bichette (who had a single through the right side and played a solid third base in this one) was greeted warmly by the crowd ahead of his first plate appearance once again, which was nice to see. Kevin Gausman went so far as to step off and throw both hands up to indicate that he needed a different baseball than the seemingly perfectly fine one already in hand so as to compel Bichette to linger in the moment as it developed. Gausman has always seemed like a good egg, and this was further evidence for sure.
