I would venture to say that you have probably never seen a ball clank off of Daulton Varsho's glove in centre field quite the way it did in the sixth last night, and I would venture further that, having seen it happen the once now, you will probably never see another one clank off his glove quite like that again, given Daulton Varsho's overall sure-handedness and fine fielding, even if he has maybe lost a step (who among us?) and has lost kind a good deal off of his arm, too (who again?). But clank it did, this clankmost clanker, and the next thing you know, you're looking at three unearned runs in the sixth inning of a game you end losing by two. Alejandro Kirk homered, though, and Vladdy doubled and scored, so let us agree that those things, at least, were really quite good. As was the pitching! Aside from the three unearned runs that arose due to the aforementioned clank in Jeff Hoffman's inning, opener Braydon Fisher allowed the only other run, and we ran all kinds of guys out there after him: Spencer Miles, Jeff Hoffman, Mason Fluharty, Tyler Rogers, Brandon Little (who has such a sympathetic look about him even when he is doing well), and finally Louis Varland, who has not had as many chances to pitch in recent days, as the Blue Jays are not so much finding themselves "leading late." Shane Bieber throws today, though, and last time out he very much looked like his old self, so who knows? It's a getaway-day game, and every instance of afternoon baseball is to be welcomed, in my view, even if you have lost four straight (which, arguably, we may have).
