How could this be the one-hundred-and-fifteenth time Max Scherzer has struck out ten or more batters in a single game? This is a profoundly unreasonable amount of times to have done that, isn't it? I guess that's no small part of how you make your way past the great Gaylord Perry for ninth-place all time for strikeouts literally ever at 3535 (and counting!), which Scherzer also managed Sunday afternoon as he helped us secure just our third series-sweep of the whole season, if you can believe it (the A's right at the start [squeakers, though], and the Red Sox back when they looked like the worst team anyone had ever seen, with open displays of on-field acrimony [it got dark there {but has since gotten, alas, better}]. That the boys continued to bop against this usually-excellent Mariners staff remained delightful: more homers for Kirk and Okamoto, and at least a hit for nearly everybody in the lineup (don't worry, Charles, McAdoo; you're still cool). And so it looks like we'll head into this week's huge series in Cleveland a-game-a-half behind those selfsame Guardians for the final playoff spot. Two-out-of-three would feel pretty good, wouldn't it? But anything less than that would be tough? Vladdy, whom I am delighted to have heard the SkyDome crowd emphatically get behind in a late at-bat of little consequence on Sunday, has returned to hitting the ball super hard, but is still largely hitting it directly at people. But this is progress! If Vladdy gets right for a month, imagine how much fun that would be.
