Of course, we do not blame the pitching for a loss in which the bats mustered but a single run (guys we are almost certainly going to need more than just the one, guys). That would be foolish. And yet, it is notable, is it not, that Eric Lauer, who allowed a three-run homer in the first, might well have benefited from the use of an "opener" in that same first inning to avoid the top of the order the first time through, and maybe have some more favourable platoon match-ups when he came into the game in the second (or else compel the Rays to go to their bench early)? Was it not this very same Eric Lauer who voiced his displeasure with that particular practice really quite recently? I'd think that if one were a fifth starter, pitching below replacement level, with an ERA north of six, one might welcome all they help they could get? Is weakness no less a blessing than strength in that it brings us nearer to the love and help of Christ? This is why Jesus invented the opener, Eric Lauer. To help.
