| this one got in on the hands, a little |
Fourteen runs! On twenty hits! A seven-run fourth! Ernie Clement went five-for-five inclusive of a homer! Valenzuela and Sanchez dingered also! Trey Yesavage pitched further scoreless innings, as did several of his pals! And yet pretty much all the talk both during and after this especially merry game was of none of these excellent things, but instead of the even excellenter thing that was Addison Barger's 101.2MPH (that's 162.7 km/h, for those among us that think more clearly in metric [maybe you have been watching Japanese baseball lately, or playing a Japanese baseball video game; who knows what anybody is really up to]) Marvel vs. Capcom 2 proton cannon of a throw to the plate to end the top of the second inning. I mean, just look at this thing. That throw, along with a pair of walks, marked Barger's fine return to the lineup after spraining, you will recall, literally both ankles on the same play running out a groundball really quite some time ago. It was a freaky and somewhat ignoble situation. But that's the past! The present is a series win over the Angels, as we sit a mere half-game out of the final Wild Card spot (with several games still to play this season). Dare we dream of the sweep? Even with young José Soriano—a fine fellow who, by some measures, had the best opening weeks to a season of any starting pitcher in the history of baseball (one earned run in six starts is tidy)—on the hill tomorrow? I say "hey sure might as well," even if we have Eric Lauer throwing somewhat grumpily behind Sunday's appointed (anointed? I don't know that they'd go that far) opener Spencer Miles. Could still be good!
