Pirates 4, Blue Jays 1: Oh Dear

"It is not, nor it cannot come to good," as Hamlet said about it

Vladdy—who had scored the Blue Jays' only run, sliding home ahead of the throw to the plate on an Ernie Clement single through the left side in the fourth inning—left the game immediately after being hit by a 92MPH sinker very much to the right elbow in the fifth. And when I say immediately, I do mean immédiatement: Vladdy exclaimed, and, without uttering so much as a minor oath, turned and walked not just directly to the dugout, but directly into the tunnel towards the clubhouse. That Vladdy, who is essentially impossible to keep out of any game all season for any reason real or precautionary, responded thus is cause not just for regular concern, but for super duper concern, in my view. This was not long after Dylan Cease, who had settled in and was truly dealing after allowing two monstrous bean tanks earlier in the game (including earliest in the game [on the very first pitch of the game to our old friend Spencer Horowitz]), was pulled mid-inning with what looked like, and hopefully is only, minor but persistent cramping (banana! stat!). None of it good! After Chase Lee gave up a two run home run to Esmerlyn Valdez (his first career hit, and so good for Esmerlyn [I am not made of stone]), the Blue Jays had some action in the home half of the seventh, but right where you'd have wanted Vladdy, it was instead his replacement Lenyn Sosa at the dish grounding out on a three-one pitch to end the inning with two runners in scoring position. Both Springer and Varsho batted with a couple runners on in the bottom of the ninth, but no.

A series win, then, but no sweep, and concerns about the health of our two best players. Mixed bag! The Marlins are in for three starting tomorrow night.
