"It's too bad that it's Corbin Carroll coming up with the bases loaded," I distinctly thought moments before our doom, "since he's a more or less perfect baseball player." Sure enough! Poor Jeff Hoffman, who couldn't find the plate with anything but his fastball, and who is really going through it broadly right now. There has been some chatter (including in SMS texts I am receiving) about inserting young fireballer Louis Varland (whom all rightly esteem) into the closer's rĂ´le in his place, but I find this doubtful, given Varland's multi-inning versatility—and actually, the end result of Varland being used in high-leverage, but not specific "save" situations, is that Varland's usage actually lines up better with the modern understanding of how top bullpen arms are to be deployed, so I am on the whole okay with it. I will never fault the pitching staff (any part of it) for losing a game in which we only scored two runs, but perhaps understandably, that's not how Jeff Hoffman felt about it at all. "It's heavy. Usually, I'm the reason whether we win or lose. It definitely carries some weight. You feel terrible when outings like this happen." Brutal. On a more cheerful note, Vladdy made a nifty over-the-shoulder basket catch well into right field for one choice out, and a nice scoop and glove-first-dive to first base for another, and he seemed pretty stoked about both (me too!).
